On February 10, 1983, a vote was taken to officially organize the GFWC-Candia Junior Woman’s Club (former club name).  However, it wasn’t until May 19, 1983 that the club became a member of the New Hampshire Federation of Junior Women’s Clubs and GFWC (the national organization).  During the first year, projects included making and placing of street signs throughout the town, conducting a book drive for the town Library, providing games for the children at the Candia Volunteer Fire Department 4^th of July Celebration, and planting flowers in the town’s planters.

Within the first couple years, there were several projects that were begun that have become annual events – a high school scholarship is awarded, Meet the Candidates Night, sponsoring the Red Cross Bloodmobile, conducting a Babysitting course, providing paper goods for the school fluoride program, and the Christmas Tree Lighting and carol singing.

The club has encouraged Candia’s students to get involved with volunteerism, so the club has sponsored a high school version of this organization for young women.  This group is called GO (Greater Outreach) Candia.

To better reflect the club’s focus, the name was changed in 2002 to the GFWC Candia Community Woman’s Club.  This club has become an accepted and ‘expected’ part of the Candia community.  Some of the expected events, besides the ones mentioned before, that are currently conducted by the club are the Chocolate Extravaganza, teacher appreciation, providing refreshments at the Town Meeting, the Community Food Pantry, a Continuing Education Scholarship for a Candia woman, holiday baskets, and sponsoring Candia Old Home Days.

The club is continually growing and evolving to meet the needs and interests of its members.  The motto of GFWC is “Unity in Diversity”.  The Candia Club certainly reflects this theme with its diversity of members, but unified focus of purpose.
